My Five Favourite Shows Right Now

Happy Thursday everyone! Its time for another round up of TV shows I’ve been loving lately, because there are just so many. So what do you do when you’ve found a show that you love? You blog about it. After you’ve told all your workmates about it first.

The OA

This show is different from anything I’ve seen, and I’ll admit that after the first episode I wasn’t convinced. But I have this rule with myself, that if a show kind of catches my attention, but not fully, that I should watch at least three episodes before I make my mind up. It’s a good job I persevered, because by the end of the third episode I was hooked.

Basically, it follows the story of a girl who returns home after being missing for seven years. She was blind when she went missing, and when she returns home, she can see again. In the first season she tells us where she’s been for the last seven years. It is kind of drama, kind of sci-fi, and just really fascinating. I can’t give away too much otherwise I will spoil the plot, but I 100% recommend you give this a go. There’s only 8 episodes, so it won’t take too much of your time.

Black Mirror

I’ve never met a person who didn’t love Black Mirror. Again, it’s unlike anything you will have seen before. It addresses the impact that the creation of new technologies have on society. Each episode has a different story line, different characters, and a different cast. I particularly like this, because you can watch the episodes in any order, and if you’re not feeling one of them, then you don’t have to see it through to the end, you can just skip to the next one (I may have done this once or twice).

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

I’ve gotta be honest, I watched the first episode, and though I was entertained, I didn’t have any intentions to watch this season the whole way through. It was funny enough, but also kind of ridiculous. But then I watched another, and another, and before I knew it, I had finished all 18 episodes.

The main plot line follows a woman who is chasing after an ex fling from her teenage years. It’s a comedy, with many musical interludes throughout each episode. The musical bits are commentaries on various aspects of modern society. It’s funny yet impressively intelligent.

The Mindy Project

I love this show. And I know I’m a bit behind the eight ball on this one, as the first season came out years ago, but I spent last weekend bingeing the first couple of seasons so I’m quickly catching up. Mindy Kaling’s character is a little crazy but actually entirely relatable. All of the characters are kind of just exaggerated versions of normal people.

I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll mention it again. As a twenty something, I totally relate to the characters, who are also navigating their way through their twenties. I mean, my life is no where near as exciting as theirs, but I can definitely relate to some of the life decisions and every day hurdles they face. You should go binge this now if you haven’t already.

What are you guys watching? Is there anything I missed off this list that I need to watch?

Favorite Things Part 2

I did a Favorite Things post way back in April, so I thought it was well time for another one. Below are a few things that I’ve been loving lately.

Winter is almost over, Spring is moving on in, and I’m so happy about it. It’s getting a little warmer, the days are getting longer, but most importantly the Spring lambs are out, and they are just so cute. My motivation to get out and exercise at my local park (which is also a working farm), has never been higher. Here’s a picture of one of my new friends.

Ripped Jeans

Okay, I’m a bit behind the times, but this weekend I bought my first ever pair of ripped jeans, and I just love them. They just add that little bit of effortless edge to an outfit.

Married At First Sight USA

Have you ever watched this show?? I always thought it was just another mass produced reality show, but when I stumbled across it whilst eating dinner in front of the tv the other night, I became positively intrigued. In the episode I was watching, the couples were moving in together, and I couldn’t help but question how you could possibly move in with someone YOU JUST MET. But apparently it actually works out for some of the couples. Totally fascinated. I’ve got to find more!

Garnier Micellar Water

I was given a bottle of the Garnier Micellar Water a little while ago, and it’s made my night time routine so much easier. This stuff literally takes my makeup off in one swoop, and it leaves my face feeling super clean. If i’m wearing full eye makeup, I might also need to use a bit of makeup remover too, but day to day, I generally just wear a coat of mascara, so this works perfectly for me.

Climbing Trees

I spent my Sunday climbing trees. Or to be more specific, I spent the day doing a high ropes course way up in the trees. It was both physically and mentally challenging, but also so much fun. If you live in Auckland, I would highly recommend checking out Tree Adventures

TV Shows That Make My Heart Happy

I’m a sucker for a feel good tv show. You know, the ones that always have a happy ending, and are super unrealistic, but you just feel good when you’re watching them?

So I’ve compiled a list of my favourite feel good tv shows. Here they are in no particular order:

Gilmore Girls

It’s got those small town vibes, the lovable and quirky characters, and as a girl who grew up with a single mother, I can totally relate to Lorelai and Rory’s relationship. I don’t think my mum and I speak quite as fast though.

Hart of Dixie

Like Gilmore Girls, it is set in a small town with a handful of characters that we grow to know and love throughout the seasons. I’ve imagined myself living in this town and being best friends with Zoe Hart once or twice.

IT’S JUST SO GOOD. The soundtrack is incredible. If you are not a country music fan, you probably will be after watching this. It has it’s drama, but most of the time, everything works out in the end.

How I Met Your Mother

Oh how this show makes me laugh. Its hilarious and far fetched, yet smart and totally relateable. When watching it, I kind of feel like the crew are my friends, and I hang out with them in that booth in MacLarens all the time.

It’s amazing. It’s a classic. You will laugh. I don’t need to say anymore.

So there you have it, my list of shows that make my heart happy when I need a pick me up. Do you have anymore to add to this list? Comment below!

Guide To Surviving Winter

You might have figured this out from my previous posts, but winter in New Zealand really isn’t my favourite time of year. It’s constantly freezing, it rains a lot, and there are absolutely no public holidays between June and October. It’s a long haul.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. These cold days give me the opportunity to take a step back and enjoy some down time at home, without feeling like I “should” be out doing something.

So what have I been doing to keep myself entertained?

I’m ashamed to say I don’t read near as much as I used to. When I have downtime, I find myself choosing to watch a show rather than read a book. Reading is something that I have been making a real effort to prioritize this winter, even if it is just fifteen minutes each night before bed.

My favorite book I’ve read lately is Me Before You, which I really enjoyed. It is a sad one though. Check it out here.

I’ve really been enjoying working on this blog, whether I’ve been creating content, thinking of ideas and reading other blogs, or working on the layout. It’s been cool to have a new project. I’ve even created an Instagram specifically for the blog, where I’ll post pictures of what I’ve been up to, and pretty, inspirational things. You can follow me @thisgirlinhertwenties.

Cooking and baking

I’ve blogged about my adventures in the kitchen here and here. I’ve been working on creating wholesome and healthy dinners more regularly, more tasty and nutritious breakfasts, and also baking the occasional delicious treat.

To be honest, in the past, I often felt like spending time in the kitchen is a bit of chore. But I’ve actually discovered that if I just potter around the kitchen, put some music on and take my time, it can actually be quite enjoyable.

This weekend alone I baked a bacon and egg pie, made some toasted muesli, and baked some brownies! That’s me sorted for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next few days.

Binge watching

Of course I’ve spent more time than I should binge watching Netflix. I’m kind of obsessed with re-watching Gilmore Girls right now, and cannot wait for the new season to come out. November 25th is marked in my calendar.

Escaping to a warmer climate

There is no better feeling then trading in the freezing weather for 30 degrees sunshine. You can read more about my recent trip away here.

So that’s what I’ve been up to this winter. What do you do to make the winter months more enjoyable?

Favorite Things Part 1

I’ve been thinking lately about how important it is to have a positive outlook on life. Sometimes it is the littlest things that can turn a bad day into a better one, and so I thought I would share a few of the things that have made me happy this week.

Movie: Hunt for the Wilder People

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It is heart-warming and hilarious, which made it perfect pick me up for a Thursday night.

It is a very much a New Zealand film, complete with beautiful scenery and thick Kiwi accents. I do wonder if part of the appeal of this film, for myself and those that I have spoken to about it, is that it is in someway relatable. After all, it’s not often that we see our culture and hear our accents on the big screen. I would love to hear what someone who is not so familiar with New Zealand would think of this film.

If you haven’t seen Hunt for the Wilder People yet, check out the trailer here.

Playlist: Spotify – Songs to Sing in the Car

Ok, this has to be one of the best playlists yet. Every single song is an absolute banger. I’m talking Spice Girls, Beyonce, Bon Jovi, Grease and so so much more. It’s not often that my boyfriend and I can find a playlist that suits both of our music tastes, but if ever there was one, this is it. Next time you’re going on a road trip, bust this one out.

TV Show: Girls

Can we just talk about how amazing season 5 of Girls is. I have been a big fan of this show since I first discovered it a few years ago, but I am absolutely loving the character development that we are seeing this season.

Even though the girls find themselves in some crazy situations that I couldn’t even dream up if I tried, the characters are still so damn relatable. These girls are navigating their way through their twenties just like I am, and I love that. They also get to figure out who they are, while living in New York City, which makes the show even better.
