My Favourite Skincare Products

It feels like I’ve been searching for the perfect skincare routine for the longest time. And guys, I think I’ve finally found it. I know, I can’t believe it either. One of the ways that I find new products is from blogs, so I thought I’d share the products with you, just in case anyone out there is interested.

Garnier Micellar Water

I wrote about this way back in August, and I’m still loving it. Over the past year, I’ve used two bottles of this stuff. Considering I use it every single day, often more than once, I’m pretty happy with how long it lasts.

I start off my nightly skin care routine by putting a few squirts of this on a cotton pad. It removes all my makeup and leaves my face feeling pretty clean.

Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser

After trying out tonnes of different drugstore cleansers, I recently purchased Cetaphil for the first time, and this stuff is seriously changing my life. I have the one for oily skin, but they have versions for all skin types. I apply it to my face with warm water, after I have used to the micellar water, to get rid of any lingering makeup and give my face a deep clean. Ever since I have been using this, my skin has completely cleared up and is so soft and glowy. Seriously amazing. And to think, I was getting ready to shell out the big bucks for a more high-end product.

Lush Mask of Magnaminty and Lush Cup O’ Coffee Face and Body Masks

I talked about the Mask of Magnaminty when I first bought it, and I am still loving this product. It has this very calming scent which smells delicious and also makes me feel really relaxed. Whilst wearing it, you can totally feel it working on your skin to give it a deep clean, and the morning after applying this, my skin is always clear and blemish free – it’s amazing. I even sometimes just use this as a spot treatment if I don’t feel like covering my whole face.

I love the Cup O’ Coffee mask almost as much as the Mask of Magnaminty. I find that the Mask of Magnaminty is better at treating breakouts, but other than that, the Cup O’ Coffee mask is just as good. It smells delightful as if you are covering your face in coffee and chocolate, which you kind of are. As you rinse this one off, you can exfoliate your face with the coffee grinds. The end result is glowing, soft, smooth skin which smells amazing. I love using this one in the morning or during the day if I’m working at home, to perk me up in the afternoon when my concentration is lacking but it’s too late in the day for a coffee.

Both of these masks are self-preserving, which means they last a lot longer than the fresh masks from Lush, but still use all natural ingredients. I usually do a mask at least once a week – more if I have the time!

What are your holy grail skincare products that I need to try?

First Impressions: Lush Mask of Magnaminty

In the last year or so, I’ve really jumped on the Lush bandwagon, and slowly but surely, my bathroom is filling up with those token black Lush pots.

After watching a review on Youtube about the Mask of Magnaminty, I was desperate to give it a go, and so yesterday, I treated myself to it. I was not having the best skin day, waking up with tired and blemished skin, and I was hoping this mask would be my savior.

I should note that this mask is self preserving, which means it lasts longer than normal Lush masks. I think mine has about four months left before it expires. All ingredients are natural, and listed on the pot.

The first thing I noticed when putting on is how minty it smelt. If you don’t like mint, probably don’t bother with this one. I left it on for a bit over 10 minutes, and in that time I could definitely feel it working on my skin.

I washed it off with warm water. There are some gritty bits in the mask which are meant to work as an exfoliater, which means not only are you getting a good deep clean, but you are exfoliating your skin as you wash it off.

I have to say, I think I was expecting miracles, as I do with all new beauty products. I was hoping to remove this mask to reveal perfectly flawless skin, which didn’t happen (but come on, is any product THAT good?). My skin did however feel much cleaner after using this, and I’m hoping that with regular use, the more effective it will be in helping me realize my vision of flawless, glowing skin.

Have you tried this? Are there any other Lush masks I have to try?

My Favourite Beauty Products for Fair Skin

I have fair skin, like the fairest of the fair. Even when I have a tan, people still comment on how pale I am – I am THAT fair. In my teens, I used to experiment with various fake tans to try and conform to that bronzed skin ideal, but to be honest, the constant upkeep was too much for a lazy girl like me, so I decided to embrace my fair skin, and to choose clothes and makeup that compliment my skin colour.

With fair skin, comes the ever lasting search for beauty products that are light enough to match my skin, of which there seem to be very few. Over the years, I’ve been through so many different brands, but have found it near impossible to find a foundation that matches my face and doesn’t leave me looking orange.

But praise the lord, I seem to have finally stumbled onto a few products that match my skin tone, so I thought I should share them with you, so that you too, can solve your fair skin issues.

NARS Sheer Glow in Mont Blanc Light 2

I took the plunge and purchased a bottle of NARS Sheer Glow, and I’m so happy I did. This had been highly recommended to me by my fair skin friends, and I’d also seen it mentioned a lot on Youtube. It is a little more than I like to spend on makeup, at about $70 NZD a bottle, plus an extra $5 if you want the pump lid. With foundation though, I don’t mind spending a little bit more, because it really is the base of the face, and if it looks good, then I will feel good. It’s a light coverage, which is good for me as I don’t really like looking like I have a lot of makeup on. It’s super buildable though, which works for those days when I want a bit of extra coverage.

The most important thing though, is that it actually matches my skin tone, which is no simple task. I got the shade Mont Blanc, which is one of the six “light” shades available. This one is number 2 in the light range, and is described as having pink undertones. With six light shades available, all with varying undertones, it’s likely that you’ll be able to find one that matches your skin tone perfectly.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Fair 1

Much like my ongoing search for the perfect foundation, I have had similar struggles with concealer. I find it impossible to find the right shade, that also offers enough coverage and actually stays on. I did stumble onto a good thing with Benefit Boing concealer, and purchased this a couple of times, but I don’t love it enough to keep paying the $40 price tag, when there might be something just as good, for a lower price out there. After hearing about the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer from various beauty bloggers, I thought it couldn’t hurt to give this a go, especially considering I walk past the Collection stand at my local supermarket regularly.  It has great coverage, the fair 1 shade matches my skin perfectly, and it actually seems to last the day. With my Boing concealer, I was often touching up throughout the day, but not with this one! And it is so affordable, at about $15 NZD a pop.

NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation in Ivory

I’m not going to say this is my favourite powder of all time, but in terms of matching my skin tone, it does a good job. It is a good price at less than $20 NZD, so I will probably continue to purchase this for the time being. I have tried ones that I like more, such as the Estee Lauder Double Wear, but there’s a huge price difference, so for now, I’ll stick with NYX.

The Balm Cindy-Lou Manizer Highlighter

Although I have fully embraced my fair skin, it’s nice to add a bit of glow and dimension to my face, which is where blushes, bronzers and highlighters come in. My usual approach to adding colour to my face has been to sweep a little bit of blush on my cheeks, usually a warm pink shade, as this seems to work best for my skin tone. However, I recently purchased The Balm Cindy-Lou Manizer Highlighter, without quite knowing what it was. I picked this up for $5 at a makeup clearance sale, and thought it looked interesting, but knew nothing about the brand or the product. I googled it when I got home, to find out that it usually retails for anywhere between $40 and $50 NZD. If I’d known how much I was going to love this, I would have stocked up! I’ve seen this described as a pinky-peach blush that can be used as a blush, eyeshadow and highlight. I love products that do it all. This has been an amazing addition to my makeup routine, as it adds a natural bit of colour to my cheeks, and I sometimes use it as an eyeshadow when I’m wanting to brighten up eyes a bit, on a natural makeup day.

These are the main products I use regularly, I’d love to know what other products people recommend for fair skin. What products do you use?

On My Wishlist

With Christmas fast approaching, there are so many amazing things available in stores, and I am spending a lot more time in shops while I complete my Christmas shopping. I’m happy to say I have been very self-controlled, and have been buying for others only. But on my shopping endeavors, I have come up with a list of things I really want to buy for myself once my bank account recovers from Christmas. (Of course if some of these things end up in my stocking that’s ok too 😉 )

All images are taken from the websites linked below.

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation

I feel like I am constantly searching for the perfect foundation. I’ve been through various bottles of different products, and still haven’t found “the one”. Earlier this year, I invested in a pricey MAC foundation which was pretty close to perfect, only to accidentally smash it on the floor after one wear, and I was absolutely heartbroken. Since then, I’ve been making do with various drugstore foundations that I already had stashed in my cupboard, but I’m ready to invest in a higher quality one. Nars Sheer Glow has been recommended to me several times, so I’d love to give this a go.

Chi Chi Nudes Eye Shadow Palette

I’m in need of a new eye shadow palette, and I really like the look of these ones. I’ve heard good things about the Chi Chi palettes, and it features all my go-to colours, so it must be a goodie!

T2 Strawberries and Cream Loose Leaf Tea

I love strawberries, so it’s no surprise that this is my favourite T2 tea. I’ve had this one before, but I haven’t got any left. I want more!

If you haven’t checked it out, T2 is an amazing shop that stocks pretty much every flavour of loose leaf tea you can think of. They have heaps of tasters set up for you to try, and they’ll even brew up one of your choice to test out, if you want to try before you buy.

Holiday reading material

In New Zealand, Christmas means long days spent at the beach, so a big pile of good books is a necessity. On my list at the moment is Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and Sweet Bitter by Stephanie Danler.

Lush Products

My local shopping mall has recently brought in a Lush store. Ever since, I have become obsessed with going into the store to check out their products. I’m dying to try some of their bath bombs.

So those are a few things on my wishlist. What’s on yours?

Latest Beauty Purchases – First Impressions

I’ve bought a few beauty and hair products over the last few weeks, so I thought it was about time I did another first impressions post. I grabbed the NYX products from a pop up sale on Once It, and picked up the hair products at an annual pop up sale, which was conveniently located just down the road from my office – the perfect Friday lunch activity.

NYX – Photo-Loving Primer

This is lavender in the tube, but appears colourless on your face. This shade is designed to brighten the skin. It is also available in a green shade which hides redness, and a clear one which covers the pores. I was amazed by how smooth it made my skin feel. I wore it under a foundation that tends to go patchy after a few hours of wear, and I was amazed to see that when used with this NYX primer, it lasted for a lot longer. So far, I’m super happy with this purchase, especially considering I only paid $14.95 NZD. It is just as good as the more expensive primers I have purchased in the past.

NYX Mineral Stick Foundation – Fair

This is the first time I have used a stick foundation, and I had to YouTube how to apply it. The first layer offered a light coverage, but it’s really build-able which means it can be as light or as heavy as you like. I’d say it is more creamy then matte. So far, I’m quite liking it, but I’d need to wear it for a full day before I can really make a decision on it. This only cost me $9.95 which is probably the most affordable foundation I have ever purchased.

NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder – Porcelain

This comes in a round black compact, with a decent sized mirror. It has a  nice, flawless matte finish, with really good coverage.  I have been using the Maybelline Fit Me powder religiously for the last few years, but thought I would branch out and try something new, and I’m happy I did. I can definitely see myself repurchasing this, especially for $17.95 NZD.

NYX Baked Blush – 06 Wanderlust

I had expected this to be a little more pink, but it is actually a very peachy shade. That’s ok though, I don’t currently have a peach blush, so it’s nice to try something different. This is highly pigmented, and you don’t need to put too much on the brush. It’s also not too powdery – some of my blushes in the past have been super powdery and they go everywhere. It was $12.95 NZD.

Kevin Murphy Body Builder Volumising Mousse

I picked this up at a hair care sale recently. I don’t typically use a lot of product in my hair, because it is super thick and quite long, and I just find it easier to kind of let it do it’s thing naturally. But I thought I’d give this a go for those times when I want to add a bit of extra style. The first time I used it, I massaged a few pumps into my hair and it added a lot of texture and volume. The next time, I just used one pump and it gave it a little more height without feeling like it was full of product.  I think this stuff is going to be really useful when it comes to creating big voluminous waves.

Revlon Professional Equave – Hydro Nutritive Detangling Conditioner

This was the other item I purchased at the hair care sale. I thought this might be good for those days when I haven’t washed my hair and its needs a bit of extra shine. This definitely adds a little bit of extra shine, and it smells great – all good things in my books!

So that is all that I have bought lately. You can find all the NYX products on the NYX Cosmetics website, and the hair products can be picked up online too. What have you bought recently that you are loving?

Favorite Things Part 2

I did a Favorite Things post way back in April, so I thought it was well time for another one. Below are a few things that I’ve been loving lately.

Winter is almost over, Spring is moving on in, and I’m so happy about it. It’s getting a little warmer, the days are getting longer, but most importantly the Spring lambs are out, and they are just so cute. My motivation to get out and exercise at my local park (which is also a working farm), has never been higher. Here’s a picture of one of my new friends.

Ripped Jeans

Okay, I’m a bit behind the times, but this weekend I bought my first ever pair of ripped jeans, and I just love them. They just add that little bit of effortless edge to an outfit.

Married At First Sight USA

Have you ever watched this show?? I always thought it was just another mass produced reality show, but when I stumbled across it whilst eating dinner in front of the tv the other night, I became positively intrigued. In the episode I was watching, the couples were moving in together, and I couldn’t help but question how you could possibly move in with someone YOU JUST MET. But apparently it actually works out for some of the couples. Totally fascinated. I’ve got to find more!

Garnier Micellar Water

I was given a bottle of the Garnier Micellar Water a little while ago, and it’s made my night time routine so much easier. This stuff literally takes my makeup off in one swoop, and it leaves my face feeling super clean. If i’m wearing full eye makeup, I might also need to use a bit of makeup remover too, but day to day, I generally just wear a coat of mascara, so this works perfectly for me.

Climbing Trees

I spent my Sunday climbing trees. Or to be more specific, I spent the day doing a high ropes course way up in the trees. It was both physically and mentally challenging, but also so much fun. If you live in Auckland, I would highly recommend checking out Tree Adventures

What have you been loving this week?

My First Beauty Haul

Last week I did my first ever online beauty haul. I purchased a bunch of products from Beauty Joint, and they arrived on my doorstep yesterday. I thought some of you out there might be interested to know what I got, and my first impressions of the products.

All photos are from

This may shock the brow enthusiasts out there, but this is the first time I’ve ever used any product on my brows, ever. Fortunately, I have naturally dark and full brows, and so there has never really been any reason for me to do anything to them. But the current trend of full and dark brows seems to be continuing on with no sign of stopping, so I thought I would have a go at trying some brow products, in an attempt to make mine look a little more neat and tidy.

Upon using this, I’ve decided that I probably won’t bother with using cream or powder products on my brows again, as I really didn’t like the way they ended up looking really heavy on my face. Maybe I haven’t found the right product yet, or maybe I just need to take time to get used to the look. But, I don’t think this is something I will try again anytime soon.

e.l.f. Clear Brow & Lash Mascara $2.79 NZD

The other brow product I purchased was this e.l.f clear brow and lash mascara. I haven’t tried the mascara part yet, as I really purchased it for the brow aspect of it. I really, really like this product. It makes my brows look tidier, whilst still looking natural.

e.l.f. Essential Blush with Brush – Blushing $3.63

Another e.l.f product I got in the haul was the Essential Blush in the shade Blushing. This is a gorgeous, slightly peachy, pink. It’s super pigmented so you don’t need much on the brush, and a bit more shimmery than I expected, but that doesn’t put me off. My cheeks will just be a bit more sparkly than usual. This arrived perfectly on time, as my usual everyday blush had an accident a couple of days ago, and is currently in a million pieces. RIP my Dandelion face powder from Benefit (another great product I would highly recommend).

KLEANCOLOR Retractable Waterproof Lip & Eye Liner in Fuschia NZD $2.46

I bought this in the hope that it would match my range of fuschia lipsticks, and it looks like it is going to work with them perfectly. It glides onto my skin nicely. Having not actually worn it yet, i’m not sure how long lasting, or drying it will be, but I’m looking forward to giving it ago. This is retractable, with a little sharpener in the end.

LA GIRL Lipliner Pencil in Forever Red $2.79 NZD

This pencil is slightly darker then it is appears in the picture, but I still like it all the same. It goes onto my skin nicely, and will go perfectly with my selection of true red lipsticks. Again, I haven’t actually worn it yet, so I can’t comment on how it wears, but for the price, it’s worth a try.

NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Liquid Foundation in Ivory $10.52 NZD

This my first ever NYX product. I’ve heard good things about this brand, but the reviews for this specific product are not so great. I was silly and didn’t look at the reviews until AFTER purchasing it, oops.

Ivory was the best choice for me, because 9 times out of 10 I need the lightest shade available. In the tube, it almost looks a little dark for me, but when I put it in my face it is actually a bit lighter than my skin. This is easily solved with a bit of powder. It wears much better than I expected it to, but it did start to separate by the end of the night.

e.l.f. Studio Eyeshadow “C” Brush $5.60

This is my second time purchasing this brush, because I like the one I have so much, and thought a second one would be handy. It picks up lots of pigment, and is really easy to work with. I have a selection of the e.l.f studio brushes and love them all.

So that’s the haul! Have you tried any of these products? Do you have any recommendations for my next haul?
